How often do I need to visit the dentist?

There is not one right answer to this question. Current guidelines recommend judging each patient recall period in between dental checkups based on a series of individual factors which determine a patients “risk” to certain diseases of the mouth.

When you attend for a check-up at Shades clinic the dentist will not only check your teeth and gums but will also assess your brushing habits, diet, and other factors which influence your risk to tooth decay, gum disease and mouth cancer amongst other things. The dentist will then discuss these risks with you and make a decision based on these factors how long it should be until your next dental check-up.

The average length of time between checkups is usually 6 months. However, it may be recommended that some people visit the dentist every 3 months if they are at high risk of tooth decay or gum disease, whereas others may only need to visit once a year.
